Story

This is one of my early folksongs. It was meant to bring out the spirit of brotherhood that resides in most of us, but which is kept hidden when expectations of the good will of others have not been realized.

The above lyrics were published in my book, Poetry in Motion (Xlibris, 2004).

Lyrics

Every morning is a new beginning./ Every step you take can point a new way.

So, stop complaining--I don't care if it is raining--/ 'Cause nothing can put a damper on my day.

Wake up, brothers, don't be Rip Van Winkles./ Wake up,  brothers , you've been sleeping too long.

The air is changing, and a toast we'll be exchanging/ If we can still distinguish right from wrong.

So, let us sing, and call the stranger "Brother."/  Though we're different, let's still accept each other.

And the mornings will be that much brighter./ And our step a little bit lighter.

Story

This song--an early work in my writing career--fit so nicely with two other folk-style songs , that I recorded them together on a CD entitled, "Uplift."(Available as a download from CDBaby.com, and soon to be available to Fan Club members at nominal cost).

Lyrics

I'm no loser, but that's what some people would say.

I don't choose to be part of the game that they play.

It's not easy to stand up for what you believe in

When the one that you care for is leavin'

And the years of your youth slip away.

But I'm no loser, I'm no loser.

        Yes, it's somethin' I've learned:

Don't let getting burned keep you down.

No, I'm no loser, I'm no loser.

When the time's right, I know I'll be comin' around.

I'm no loser, 'cause I've got a life left to live.

There's no user who can use up the love I can give.

When the blow comes to any affair,

Disillusion can bring to the heart such confusion

That you almost give up in despair.

But I'm no loser, I'm no loser.

        Yes, it's somethin' I've learned:

Don't let getting burned keep you down.

No, I'm no loser, I'm no loser.

When the time's right, I know I'll be comin' around.

When the time's right, I know I'll be comin' around.

Lyrics

Movin' out of the city,

Far from the crowds...

Gonna set my sights on a mountain,

And give my mind a free ride among the clouds.

        I'm movin' on, movin' on.

Gonna find me a place before I'm gone.

        I'm movin' on, movin on.

Gonna find the place where I belong.

Movin' into the suburbs,

What do I find?

Sin is making lots more conversions

Than all of the religions on earth combined!

So, I'm movin' on, movin' on.

Gonna find me a place before I'm gone.

        I'm movin' on, movin' on.

Gonna find the place where I belong.

Movin' on to fulfillment,

Morally strong...

Though the road is paved with illusion,

And my only weapons are prayer and song.

Yes, I'm movin' on, movin' on.

Gonna find me a place before Im gone.

        I'm movin' on, movin' on.

Gonna find a place before too long.

Story

I wanted to write a song about the human condition and the temptations that may beckon at different stages of our lives. The result is,"The World Is Full Of Longing,"--initially titled,"Tango Of Life"--in which I couple a sensuous rhythm with a soul-searching theme.

Lyrics

The world is full of longing

For love and for belonging,

For beauty, wealth and power,

For immortality.

It's only when you look back

You see where you have lost track

Of what your soul desires--

Your true identity.

        The future holds the answers.

        If we could only see

The way in which our actions

        Affect humanity!

When young, you are in rapture,

With nothing to recapture.

By living for the moment,

You feel that you are free.

And everything is new, then.

And everything is you, then.

In time you come to terms with

Responsibility.

        The future holds the answers.

        If we could only see

The way in which our actions

        Affect humanity

It's time for meditation

On our unique creation--

How what we have to offer

Becomes our legacy.

Story

To those who incorporate religious practice into their lives, love and awe of G-d go hand in hand.

By praying, we acknowledge His role in our lives. I wish my spiritual songs could bridge the gap for

non-believers, but, to paraphrase a Christian/Jewish saying: G-d can be found where you let Him in.

Lyrics

Every creature--large or small,

Every wave upon the ocean,

Every blade of grass upon a hill,

Is no less and is no more

Than what G-d has set in motion.

Everything's created by His will.

By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will.

Every thing is newly formed;

It's sustained by G-dly yearning

For the acts of kindness that we do.

Modeh ani--Thank you, G-d;

I can feel my strength returning.

What You will of me is my will, too.

By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will.

When you eat a piece of food

With more blessing than desire,

You have forged a link onto a chain,

Elevating what was low,

Bringing to it what is higher--

Like the seed that's nourished by the rain.

By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will.

{Saying the " Shema" at night}/{ When you say your prayers at night}

{And you tremble in His  presence/{With humility and reverence}

Do you think of things you could have done

That would bring G-d closer, still?

None can live without His essence.

All derive their meaning from The One!

By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will, By G-d's will.

By G-D's Will, By G-D's Will, By G-D's Will, By G-D's Will!

Lyrics

Choose life...

Through pain and sorrow,

Choose life.

There's still tomorrow.

It's G-d's gift to you.

If you follow through,

There's much more to do...

Choose life...

The bittersweet music

That's life.

We all abuse it

And that takes its toll.

But with the right goal

We can gain control...

        At night...

        When you're awakened by fright

Don't let it shake your belief in yourself--

        Don't punish yourself--

        Just do what is right

In your life...

Think of who needs you.

Choose life.

Go where life leads you.

We're meant to be here,

Though why, isn't clear,

And time is so dear...

Choose life...choose life.

Choose life...CHOOSE LIFE!

Lyrics

Let me tell you how it's been--

It's been delightful!

This has been an evening I won't soon forget.

Let's see each other more often;

I'd like that very much.

I feel those rough edges soften

Under your gentle touch.

We've been standing here too long--

You should be going.

You may call me in the morning after ten.

Why do i feel you belong here?

You turn to go--and then,

I can hardly wait to be with you, again.

                (Musical Repeat)

We've been standing here too long--

You should be going.

Don't forget to call me--sometime after ten.

Why do I feel it so strong , dear ?

You turn to go--that's when

I start thinking how it's been.

Can't you see the state I'm in?

I can hardly wait to be with you, again.

Lyrics

I'm sorry... That I made you cry. You're too much a part of me To let our love just die. Yes, I know you rarely Gave me cause to complain. I took you for granted And caused you so much pain. Remember the day you went away And I went out looking for you? I'll never forget--you're face was so wet-- Then I knew... That I was sorry That I let you down. Things will be different now. I've changed--the`villain' has turned`clown.' I will make you happy If you tell me how. It's not fair to judge the past And not consider now. I'll never rely on some other guy Who hands me a drink and a `line.' I want you to care. As long as you're there I'll be fine. I'm sorry. You must know that's true. Of all the men I've known, The one I'd choose is you. I will never hurt you again-- It would hurt me more. Let's get back together-- It won't be like before. Story

                        Have you met Sheila?

If you walked into a crowded room with Sheila in it,

she'd probably be the center of attention.

Lyrics

Sheila? She'll be your sun on a cloudy day.

Sheila could make a hermit come out and play!

Just when your heart is in traction

From an affair that went bad,

You'll find yourself right back in action

With the best challenge you've ever had!

That's Sheila! She'll want to phone you ten times a day.

Love her, and she will know everything's O.K.

But no man could ever confine her;

She'll never do as you say.

I wonder what Sheila's planning today...

                  ( Musical Repeat )

Sheila? You're never certain just what she'll do.

Steal her, and you will find she has stolen you!

She'll win your heart in a minute,

But then you'll never be free.

[Female] : You've met her; you'd better know Sheila is me!

[Male] : Forget her; you'd better leave Sheila for me.

Story

The music presented here is a studio recording of my song produced by the Nashville Song Service , utilizing a female and male vocalist. The storyline, while a little longer than most, is loosely based on someone's actual experience.

Lyrics

She:   He drops me at the station with my heart in palpitation;

I'm going back to where I started from.

After years of being married, suddenly I'm starting over,

Fearing all the changes yet to come.

          I board the train, my face unpainted, feeling like I should've fainted;

But, instead, I sink into a seat.

You speak to me across the aisle--a stranger with a tender smile--

"Would you like a drink or bite to eat?" So,

Pinch me now to see if I am dreaming.

Now, at last, my life will have new meaning.

                    Goodbye anger! Goodbye pain!

All because I took that lucky seat on the train...

Life's no bed of roses when two partners have their poses,

And some things you don't share 'til it's too late.

Then comes the explosion, and you're falling in slow motion.

Things you loved you now begin to hate.

I used to be pretending that there'd be a happy ending

And the only way to live was day to day.

It's hard to face a sorrow, so you leave it for tomorrow,

Hoping it will somehow go away. So,

                              (Refrain)

He:     Before you came I wasn't living--she was taking, I was giving--

Hardly what you'd call a compromise.

She abused our only daughter. No one's temper could be shorter--

Something that she failed to realize.

I had to come to some decision. Life is subject to revision.

I had more than paid for my mistakes.

Now my heart is free to choose. You're worth the gamble, win or lose.

What do they say? "That's life, those are the breaks." So,

                              (Refrain)

He & She (Together):  With an old life ending, there's a new life just beginning,

But it's hard to keep your footing, just the same

Memories will follow you, and make it hard to follow through.

They'll say you don't know how to play the game. So,

Pinch me now to see if I am dreaming.

Now,at last, my life will have new meaning.

                                               Goodbye anger! Goodbye pain!

All because I took that lucky seat on the train.....

Lyrics

Call, if you need me; you should know that  care.

All I can offer I would happily share.

You just have to ask me, and I'll come to your side.

There's no real place for a runner to hide.

So, remember, when you reach a dead end,

I'm your friend.

Life isn't hollow when you fill it with love.

Let your eye follow the flight of a dove.

But if you should falter, as everyone does,

You can always give me a buzz.

Just remember: I'm for real, not pretend.

I'm your friend.

        Life without friendship

Is like a lock without a key.

        I'm so very thankful

        That I found you

        And you found me

For, working together is a beautiful thing,

Whether we're crying , or trying to sing.

And if there's a problem, why suffer alone?

They say,"Two heads are better than one."

I'll stand by you, you can bet, 'til the End.

I'm your friend.

Lyrics

Here is my love...the sounds that you hear,

The music I make...whenever you're near.

Here is my song...in Cole Porter style.

I think you will find it somewhat inclined to tease and beguile!

Straight from my heart...I meant it to be,

Sweet like a truffle...and deep like the sea.

'Though beautiful songs have been written,

None of them , somehow, would do.

So here's my song...and I wrote it for you.

                  ( Instrumental)

                 * * * * * * * * * *

Here is my song...in Cole Porter style.

I think you will find it somewhat inclined to tease and beguile.

                  * * * * * * * * * *

Why did I wait...even this long

To say to the world ...that my love is a song?

I guess it's because, to most people,

It might sound too good to be true.

Let them note it...let them quote it:

I've devoted my whole song to you!

Lyrics

I will choose to live life anew every day,

I will choose to make my own way,

In a world where people don't do as they say,

I will choose to live, anyway

I will choose to work for the good that I see,

In whatever community.

In my heart I know that what peace there may be

Comes to those who live honestly.

I never realized the power I possess

To bring about a state of true happiness.

I was too busy earning what gave me less,

        Until--suddenly--I confronted me.

I will find somebody to share in my dreams

Who will work in peace at my side.

And when time runs out and life ends, so it seems,

Then at least I'll know that I tried.

Yes, at least I'll know that I tried.

Story

It's not light and upbeat, but life isn't always, either

                                         *********************

Lyrics

Tread softly on my dreams; I still rely on you.

When life's not what it seems, I wind up feeling blue, feeling blue.

Tell me that I'm wrong; you're not like the rest.

I just went along, hoping for the best.

Please don't let me down ;I don't want to see

Another side of you--the other side of me!

When you smiled at me, I didn't have to try...

I was free to be the one and only: me, myself and I!

        Tell me that I'm wrong...

When you didn't show at the hour we set,

Your past concern for me was really easy, easy to forget!

Tell me that I'm wrong; you're not like the rest.

I just went along, hoping for the best.

Please don't let me down; I don't want to see

Another side of you--the other side of me!

Anger flushed my face; I could feel the heat!

All suddenly turned sour that once had been so sweet,oh, so sweet!

Tell me that I'm wrong; you're not like the rest.

I just went along, hoping for the best.

Please don't let me down; I don't want tlo see

Another side of you--the other side of me!

Tread softly on my dreams; I still rely on you.

Lyrics

Love has got me down.

I'll never recover moments a lover only knows.

Yes, I drank it in--the wine with the bitters--

The joys with the woes.

Love has got me down.

I really can't help just thinking of how it might have been.

But, deep in my heart, I knew he was wrong for me.

How could I win?

Love has got me down; I'm trying to fight it,

But sometimes at night it gets so bad

That my pillow gets wet from crying my eyes out.

        He's all that I had.

Love has got me down.

No use in regretting; there's no forgetting, anyhow.

Friend, I'm telling you I don't know what to do.

Oh, I wish I didn't need him now...

How I wish I didn't need him now!

Story

I published the lyrics to this song in my book, Poetry in Motion; Lyrics and Poems of Carolyn Luger Vermes. under the chapter heading of PERSONALITIES. I intend to release it as a track in a downloadable album of songs that musically portray interesting people that I've met.

Lyrics

Here's a portrait of a lady who could host a large affair

Replete with every nicety, with mother's homey flair.

But she'd rather feed the stranger who lives in poverty,

And though she likes to cook, a career she forsook to be what she be:

Chorus:

She's the "Raffle Lady" and she brings in revenue.

If you should stop to chat with her,

She could start you selling, too!

She's the "Raffle Lady," and it's all for a good cause.

She works for satisfaction, and not the applause.

She's been officer and president--she's something every year.

She does her job with dignity, without one frazzled hair!

She's made selling raffle tickets a top priority,

And it always appears we've enough volunteers--for she does the work of three!

( Repeat Chorus)

Now her children are all grown up; but even when they were small

She schlepped them to the bungalows when she would make her calls.

Yes, and even in the hotels where they didn't know her name,

She was known as the "Raffle Lady"-- her claim to fame!

(Repeat Chorus)

Now she spends time with the handicapped and gives the poor good clothes.

She works at Bingo every week and still smells like a rose!

Though she talks to many people, she keeps their secrets well.

You'd never call her "hustler"--but BOY CAN SHE SELL!!

 (Last Chorus)

Story

If you're in a slump, this song  from my archives might very well pull you out.

When I wrote it I didn't know a radiator from a heater. So just ignore the flub and enjoy the song!

Lyrics

He's a cigar smoker, he's an opera lover,

He's the cruelest joker--but it's just a cover--

That's Jack, the Radiator Man.

He's the perfect host, he'll never burn the toast,

He's big in Lion's Club--Ah, therein lies the rub--

He's just a lamb, that Radiator Man!

If you should stay, at least for a day,

He'll wine you and dine you--that's Jack!

But he just can't say, "Hope you'll stay."

        Instead, it's "Don't hurry back."!

[Refrain]

He gets up early and drives to his shop.

        He fixes heaters(?)'til five.

He takes you out to eat--it's his treat

To see to it that you're stuffed alive!

[Refrain]

He rolls up the windows when you want them down,

When you're a guest in his car.

Then he turns on the heat to "warm your feet"

And keep your mind off his cigar!

[Refrain]

He stands like a boxer, and spars like a champ.

He's like no other I've met.

But, if you can sing, he'll exit the ring

And cheer you on, I'm willing to bet!

He's a cigar smoker, he's an opera lover,

He's the cruelest joker--but it's just a cover--

That's Jack, the Radiator Man.

That's Jack, the Radiator Man!

Story

This song evokes the cry of a friendship in jeopardy in the pre-Internet era. It was written at the piano and immediately audio-taped, unedited.

Lyrics

Don't you cry, little friend, don't you cry.

I'll be back from Arizona, by and by.

As a friend, you ought to know

That no matter where I go

There's no end 'round the bend--

No goodbye.

We had fun times together for a while.

When I think what we've been through,

I have to smile.

And though miles are placed between us,

Anyone who's ever seen us would say

when we meet we'll do it up in style!

Wipe your eyes, little friend, wipe your eyes,

Or you'll flood the sands and spoil my turquoise skies...

Wipe your eyes........!

Story

This song is really a musical travelogue. It depicts the highlights of our family's trip to Florida in August of 1981. I wrote it and recorded it shortly afterwards. A copy of the original tape has languished in a drawer until now, when I decided to share it with you, our website audience.

        Sit back and enjoy!

Lyrics

We set out from New Jersey,

Planned to cover some new ground.

We had this invitation from Miami:

"Come on down!"

We thought we'd take the scenic route--

The seacoast all the way.

Then, on the way back we'd get off the track

To Disney World--hooray!

CHORUS: We're 100 miles from Disney World and 1000 miles from home.

Miami's far behind us and Orlando's yet to come.

Our car is over-heating--can't go more than 55.

But we don't care how long it takes--just as long as we arrive!

St. Augustine seemed young and fair,

Despite advancing age.

Three rivers run through the middle of town.

And the shops are all the rage!

We drank from that famous fountain,

But I have to tell the truth:

Though we felt a "zing" from the mineral spring,

We didn't recover our youth!

     (CHORUS)

We saw Daytona Beach at night;

We parked right on the sand.

The amusement park lit up the dark

Like a teen-age wonderland!

The next day: Cape Canaveral,

Where we learned, to our surprise,

That 2000 degrees is merely a breeze

For the space shuttle in the sky.

     (CHORUS)

We arrived in Coral Gables

Ahead of a hurricane.

First, a yellow sky; then it passed us by,

Leaving wind and lots of rain.

But our hostess was so gracious ,

And her dog was such a dear,

That when it thundered outside--

And the telephone died--

We pretended not to have any fear.

     (CHORUs)

We bathed behind the Eden Roc,

Right in Miami Beach.

The Venetian Pool was a little too cool,

Though it was within our reach.

But our favorite body of water

Was in Matheson Hammock Park,

With an ocean view--warm and salty, too--

And open from sun-up 'til dark.

     (CHORuS)

We went to the Seaquarium,

Saw a dolphin from below.

It smiled just like a person

That you could get to know.

The Killer Whale made quite a splash!

His trainer, without fear,

Said, "Open wide!", put her head inside--

But they pay her to re-appear!

     (CHORUS)

We trekked through Parrot Jungle

With our cameras poised to shoot.

We talked to those birds, but they spoke no words--

Guess they "didn't give a hoot" !

But the trained ones were so marvelous;

They were really smart. In fact,

One counted with her beak: I I I I

Others ran a blue streak

In a comical bicycle act!

     (CHORUS)

We spent one day in Disney World,

After a long night's drive.

We rode down Thunder Mountain--

And managed to survive!

We rode in Nemo's Submarine

And booked a trip to Mars.

With all systems go, we enjoyed every show

And we posed with the Disney stars.

Heigh ho! Heigh ho! It's off to play we go........

It's the last leg of our journey--

Our longest one in years.

We're returning with our memories

And lots of souvenirs.

We had to come home sometime;

Of our roots we were bereft.

And I'm asking you:What else can you do

When you have no money left?

LAST CHORUS: We're a long, long way from Disney World and we are heading home.

Orlando's far behind us, and Morristown's yet to come.

Our car is overloaded--can't go more than 55.

But we don't care how long it takes--just as long as we arrive!

Story

Sorry this was posted so late and there's no vocal music (temporarily indisposed). I hope that the words have meaning for you as you celebrate your respective holy days this month.

Lyrics

I love Thee with the innocence of a child.

I love Thee with a song that's pure, undefiled.

I see in You what I had hoped would be.

I see in You my true destiny.

I love Thee for the love you bring to my heart.

I love Thee for the wisdom You impart.

My body cleaves to ways that set us apart.

My mind perceives not what Thou truly art.

        How far we should see,

        Were our bodies free--

        Slaves to only Thee,

        Craving only Thee!

I love Thee for the beauty You inspire.

I love Thee for the duty You require.

My lips express what my soul knows as true:

Blessed be the Name that is You!
